Prof. Roger Southall

Honorary Research Professor

Roger Southall is an Honorary Professor in SWOP, who was previously Distinguished Research Fellow at the Human Sciences Research Council (2001-2007) and Professor of Political Studies at Rhodes University (1989-2001).  Prior to that he worked in universities in Uganda, Lesotho, Canada and the UK.  He is author of Imperialism or Solidarity? International Labour and South African Trade Unions (UCT Press), as well as being author or editor of another dozen books. He founded the HSRC's State of the Nation project, and co-edited the first four volumes.  He has also published extensively on African politics, political economy and labour in leading academic journals, as well as contributing chapters to numerous books. He is editor of the Journal of Contemporary African Studies, a major journal published by Francis and Taylor from Oxford, UK.
